Specific Phobia is characterized by extreme fear of an object or situation that is not harmful under general conditions.

Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is a Greek word meaning "fear of the marketplace." It involves the fear of experiencing a panic attack in a place or situation from which escape maybe diffucult or embarrasing.

Agoraphobia involves fear of situations such as:

*Being alone outside the home
*Being home alone
*Being in a crowd
*Traveling in a vehicle
*Being on an elevator or a bridge

Characteristics of Agoraphobia

Most people with agoraphobia develope the disorder after first suffering a series of one or more panic attacks. The attacks happen with no warning. As a result people anticipate the next attack. Keeping them from going into any place or situations where pervious panic attacks have occurred. People feel so disabled that they can't leave their homes. If you have seen the movie Copy Cat you will remember that Ms. Weaver became agoraphobic after being attacked in a restroom. People with agoraphobia may also develope depression, fatigue, tension, alcohol, or drug abuse problems and obsessive disorders, making seeking treatment crucial.
