Specific Phobia is characterized by extreme fear of an object or situation that is not harmful under general conditions.
Characteristics of Specific Phobia
People who have specific phobia know that their fear is excessive, but are still unable to overcome their emotion. Specific phobias can only be diagnosed if the fear is interfering with daily activities of school, work, or home life. The phobia stikes more than 1 in 10 people. There is no known cause, although they seem to run in families and are a little more prevalent in women. If the object is easy to avoid, than people may not feel the need to seek treatment. Sometimes they try to avoid the phobia in making important career or personal decisions.
